With Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ubisoft has announced the rebirth of the Prince of Persia franchise. Ubisoft Montpellier, the team behind the famous platformer Rayman Legends, is developing the game, which harkens back to the series' roots as a 2D action-adventure game. It will be released on January 18, 2024.

Sargon, a youthful warrior of the Immortals, stars in the new game. They are assigned to save Prince Ghassan from the cursed Mount Qaf, but they become entangled in a wider scheme that threatens the world's equilibrium. According to Ubisoft, the tale is inspired by Persian mythology and will feature a Metroidvania framework, allowing you to gradually unlock new sections and solve puzzles in Mount Qaf by acquiring additional temporal abilities. Mentrix, an Iranian-born composer, is co-composing the music with Gareth Coker.

The game has nothing to do with the postponed remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which is being worked on by Ubisoft Montreal after work by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai. Since its introduction in September 2020, the remake has been plagued by delays, and in May 2023, Ubisoft revealed that the game will not debut at June's Summer Game Fest since it was "still in an early stage."

We just visited Ubisoft Montpellier and played The Lost Crown, and we'll have more on the game after Ubisoft Forward next week.

Jordan Mechner created the original Prince of Persia, a 2D platform adventure game that was launched on the Apple II in 1989. Two sequels followed, Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and The Flame in 1993 and Prince of Persia 3D in 1999.

The series was later relaunched in 2003 with the highly praised release of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC, which inspired three sequels--Warrior Within in 2004, The Two Thrones in 2005, and The Forgotten Sands in 2010. In 2008, a spin-off titled Simply Prince of Persia was launched on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

The release date for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is set for January 18, 2024, on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
