During the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft revealed the next entry in the Gears series: Gears E-Day. This game takes the series back in time and will be available on Xbox and PC. Among the many exciting announcements at the event, Gears E-Day stood out as the most significant, and Microsoft saved it for the grand finale.
A New Direction for the Series
Fans of the Gears series were thrilled to see its continuation, even if it goes back in the timeline instead of forward. The cinematic trailer features a young Marcus Fenix struggling against a single Locust. This is a stark contrast to the experienced warrior seen in later games. In the trailer, Marcus eventually overcomes the Locust with the help of his friend Dom. Together, they witness the chaos of Emergence Day—the day when the Locusts emerged from beneath the planet and waged war against humanity.
Nostalgia and New Beginnings
The developers emphasized that Emergence Day has always been "the heart of the Gears universe." By revisiting this pivotal moment, the game aims to build the future of the series by exploring its past. Gears E-Day is set 14 years before the original Gears of War story, featuring earlier versions of iconic weapons. For example, the Lancer in this game is equipped with a bayonet instead of the familiar chainsaw. The studio hinted that players might witness the creation of the chainsaw-equipped Lancer during the campaign.
Homage to the Series' Roots
The game pays homage to the series' history with a subtle nod to Gary Jules' cover of "Mad World," a song closely associated with Gears of War since its memorable trailer over 15 years ago.
Powered by Unreal Engine 5
Continuing the series' tradition, Gears E-Day will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, ensuring cutting-edge graphics and gameplay. While there is no release date yet, fans eagerly anticipate more details.
Stay tuned for further updates on Gears E-Day as its development progresses.
